How many agents changed brokerages in 2025?

HousingWire, covering a recruiting and retention report from Courted, put the share at 16% of agents, or roughly 230,000 people.

That share did not move from the year before. HousingWire reported that the 2025 figure was unchanged from 2024.

Is the yearly share of agents who switch rising or falling?

Courted's data, as HousingWire reported it, shows the yearly share of agents changing brokerages has stayed between 16% and 18% since 2020.

So 2025 landed at the low end of a narrow band. At 16%, most agents stay with the same brokerage in any given year.

Did agent movement pick up in 2026?

RISMedia reported on a first-quarter 2026 report from Recruiting Insight, released in partnership with Lone Wolf Technologies and MyBFF Social. RISMedia described it as signaling a sharp rebound in agent mobility after a slower 2025.

Recruiting Insight limits its sample to the agents it describes as controlling or moving the needle. In that group, the likelihood of changing brands rose 35% from the quarter before, RISMedia reported.

Questions & answers

What do Houston agents ask about this?

How many agents leave real estate altogether in a year?

Courted's report, as HousingWire covered it, found that roughly 15% of agents leave the industry in any given year. About the same share, roughly 15%, are new to the business that year. A separate 16% swap brokerages. In a typical year, the agents around you include a group who just arrived and a similar group who are on their way out.

Those three shares describe different people. An agent who leaves the industry drops out of the count entirely. An agent who swaps brokerages is still licensed and still selling, just under a different firm. HousingWire reported all three shares from the same Courted report, so they sit on one basis and can be read against each other. For an agent weighing a move between firms, the swap share is the one that describes that decision.

Why does one 2026 forecast show far fewer moves than the 230,000 who moved in 2025?

The two figures count different groups. RISMedia reported that Recruiting Insight projects approximately 50,000 agent moves nationally in 2026, and the firm bases that projection on its own sample. That sample covers only the agents Recruiting Insight follows, those it says move the needle. The 230,000 figure for 2025 comes from Courted, as HousingWire reported it, and counts agents moving to a new brokerage.

Read each number against its own base. The 50,000 is a forward projection built from one sample of agents. The 230,000 is a count of agents who changed brokerages during 2025. Setting one beside the other would compare two different populations, so neither one cancels the other out.
